Why Teach?

 Why Teach?

Ashley Valles ☺

I vividly recall sitting in class in first grade, immersed in a chapter book. My teachers were fascinated at my growth, having not spoken English a year prior. I have always deeply appreciated my teachers, and felt a connection with them. Being a part of an immigrant family that always expected the most out of me, I felt immense gratitude for the kindness shown by my educators. My third grade teacher, Mrs. Gagliardi, helped shape me into who I am. Many people claim to not remember their elementary teachers, but I believe these educators are essential. They provide a sense of security and encouragement to growing minds. Their love for each child is imperative for flourishment. My teachers gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. I finally felt that I was important. Not because I was in Gifted and Talented classes, or because of my advanced reading level, but because these educators provided a secure environment to be myself, to fail, and to continue growing.

I am interested in teaching early elementary education. I am leaning towards either first or second grade, but I am open to explore the expectations and components that are unique to each grade level to find what fits me the best. For younger grades, I would like to teach the core subjects. For grades second and third, I would focus on being a reading and social studies teacher.  I want to emulate the kindness that I was shown. I want to create a safe space for children, nourishing them with the knowledge necessary to prepare them for life. I know that being a teacher is my passion. I feel no uncertainty about my choice. I am confident that I will help nurture and educate our future generations in a way that spreads kindness and compassion.

I follow multiple teachers on TikTok, but one of my favorite accounts is @kriswags3. She is an elementary teacher. I love to see what lessons she plans for the class and her methods of teaching that help enrich the minds of young learners. With so many teachers leaving the profession, it is encouraging to see educators in love with their career.

  1. Hello and welcome to you, Ashley! It was lovely to read about your experiences as a English learner with the teachers you had in the early grades. I am inspired by such teachers. That you wish to 'nourish' your future students is something special.
